Clay artist Paula Moy hand-builds sculptural wall pieces with a timeless wabi-sabi aesthetic. Influenced by primitive / naive art she combines unique shapes with raw textures.

sculptural clay

For clay artist Paula Moy the starting point is always nature. Weathered wood, stone, elemental formations and natural patinas inform her work. Hand-built earthy textured pieces, each unique and resonating with a sense of timelessness.

Working with clay

Emotion, instinct, memory form layers in the art works. With a hands-on simplicity, shaping directly with minimal tools, Paula"s process is physical and intuitive. Rolling, slapping, carving the clay, it's treated like moving parts that will come together in a stillness that invites contemplation.

The desire to create

Paula’s hand-built clay pieces are all unique. She takes inspiration from her Māori roots, primitive art and the natural rock formations and landscapes of Raglan. Her style originates from the synergy between art and nature; creating earthy textures by experimenting with clay types and slips, and by incorporating local materials like black sand, stone, or crystal fragments. Her clay works—often comprising two or more pieces—are woven together with natural flax linen or hemp cord adding an extra layer of appeal and connection to the organic nature of her pieces. Her creative desire is for the rawness of her naive/wabi-sabi artisan pieces to feel timeless and soulful, with an imperfection that invites contemplation.
